‘Bulldog’ Gowdy Has Big Plans For Dismissed FBI Agent Who Was Anti-Trump Activist
The man many believed should have been Trump’s choice for Attorney General, pointed out the various problematic things that SSA Peter Strzok had done while overseeing the Clinton and Trump-Russia investigations.
He also blasted Strozk and Director James Comey for changing the wording of Clinton’s behavior with her private email server from “grossly negligent” to “extremely careless.”
“It’s really difficult to say, ‘we’re not gonna prosecute you’ when we use the precise words, so he changed it to extremely careless,” he explained. “There is no difference -– the only difference is they didn’t want to use the wording in the statute.”
U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy wants to find out what was in the text messages that reportedly ended a high-ranking FBI official’s career.
The South Carolina Republican made his remarks in the wake of news that FBI operative Peter Strzok was fired amid allegations that he held — and perhaps acted on — biases against President Donald Trump. Strzok had been an integral part of several investigations with the potential to directly or indirectly impact Trump, his campaign or his presidency.
Allegations against the deputy hinged on a series of text messages in which he reportedly disparaged Trump. Gowdy, who currently chairs the House Oversight Committee, wants to know what is in those texts. “People have the right to assume that people who are investigating them are objective and have not already made up their minds,” Gowdy said.
As Fox News reported, Strzok led the FBI’s interview of Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser who last week pleaded guilty to lying to the agency about his previous communications with a Russian diplomat. According to CNN, he was also instrumental in the agency’s investigation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server for official government business.
During the 2016 presidential campaign that pitted Clinton against Trump, Strzok reportedly changed then-FBI Director James Comey’s initial statement about her actions from “grossly negligent” to merely “extremely careless.”
Notably, the former phrase could have resulted in criminal charges while the latter did not. Strzok’s involvement in these and other pivotal FBI investigations led Gowdy to call for transparency. “That’s why we need to see the text and interview this special agent,” he said.
Trump himself criticized the agency, mentioning the controversy surrounding Strzok specifically, in a series of weekend tweets. In another tweet, he claimed the FBI’s reputation was “in tatters” and at its lowest point in history. Without going that far, Gowdy echoed Trump’s assessment. “The bureau has had a really bad last 18 months,” he said, “and this makes it worse, frankly.”
