Trump Threatens Government Shutdown Over Immigration; Cops Say Go Ahead
On Sunday, as the nation’s elite news media prepared for their morning TV talkfests, President Donald Trump tweeted that he is open to the political tactic of shutting down the federal government if Democratic lawmakers and some Republican liberals members of Congress continue to stubbornly refuse to vote for the changes the Trump team seeks to a revamped U.S. immigration system. One of the most important items is the building of a security wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“I would be willing to ‘shut down’ government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall!” Trump tweeted. “Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!” Trump said.
Trump has made a point of fulfilling his campaign promises, one of which entailed building an effective border wall to deter illegal immigration as well as other security measures such as additional Border Patrol agents.
The U.S. Congress has given him a miniscule amount but it’s far from being the amount he has requested. Trump is also seeking the revamping of policies regarding legal immigration, such as doing a way with the visa lottery program.
Trump has also demanded that the U.S. shift to an immigration system that’s based more on merit and less on family ties. The Trump-hating Democrats and the Never-Trump Republicans have objected to some of the changes Trump seeks. The federal budget year ends Sept. 30, and lawmakers will spend much of August in their states campaigning for re-election in November.
As usual, the news media is blaming the GOP for the shutdown and circulating news stories and editorials depicting Democrats as America’s heroes. But this time around, a large number of Trump supporters are pushing to get the message out that the Democrats want illegal aliens’ votes while the federal government shutdown in many cases would help Trump to make America great again.
For example, local and state police officials and sheriffs are telling their bosses and voters that cloud of closing down the federal government has its silver lining: intelligence agencies such as the CIA, NSA and federal law enforcement departments such as the FBI, the ATF, the DEA and parts of the IRS would no longer be funded to play political games or violating citizens’ constitutional rights.
“If some of these agencies close down, Americans will be free from harassment, phony investigations, illegal searches and seizures as well as illegal surveillance. Maybe for a while, we can let local law enforcement protect and serve rather than having the feds coming in and turning local law enforcement upside-down with their bogus ‘civil rights’ or ‘police racism’ investigations,” said Mike Baker, a former cop, attorney and political strategist.
According to the anti-Trump news media, the President would be risking Congressional seats in November if he does allow most government agencies to close on Oct. 1, 2018, which is the first day of the new budget year when Republican control of both chambers of Congress is at stake.
“The media always make these predictions and they are just about always wrong. There reporters can’t tell the difference between educated guesses and wishful thinking,” said Iris Aquino, a former police commander and security director. “It appears that the Democrats and news media already shot their loads and most voters have seen more than a few examples of their mendacity,” she added.
House Republicans released a spending bill this month that provides $5 billion next year to build Trump’s wall, a major boost.
Separately Sunday, Trump tweeted that there are “consequences when people cross our Border illegally” and claimed that many who do so are “using children for their own sinister purposes.”
